This bird is not commonly found in elfin forests and humid forest edges along the eastern slope of the Andes. However, it seems to be absent from the Apurimac Valley. Its preferred elevation range is between 2900 to 3700 meters, occasionally extending down to 2500 meters in certain areas. You can locate it within the understory and mid-story levels of shrubs and trees within treeline forests. Additionally, it can also be spotted in isolated pockets of woodland found in grasslands near the treeline.

This tanager frequents elfin forests and humid scrub areas around and above the treeline, often participating in mixed-species flocks alongside flower piercers and fellow tanagers searching for berries and insects.
