The plain prinia (Prinia inornata), measuring 13–14 centimeters in length, features short rounded wings, a slightly elongated tail, robust legs, and a concise black beak. During the breeding season, adults display a grey-brown upper plumage, accented with a brief white eyebrow and rufous fringes on their folded wings. Below, their underparts exhibit a whitish-buff hue. Both males and females share an identical appearance. In winter, these warblers adopt a warmer brown tone on their upperparts and a more buff coloring on their underparts. The tail becomes longer during this season. Several plumage shade variations exist among different races. The endemic Sri Lankan race maintains its summer plumage, including the shorter tail, all year round.
