Description: The gartered trogon (Trogon caligatus), displays typical trogon characteristics, this bird measures 23 to 25 cm (9.1 to 9.8 in) in length and weighs between 38 to 57 g (1.3 to 2.0 oz). The male of the nominate subspecies showcases a violet-blue head, neck, and upper breast, contrasted by a black face and throat with a pale yellow eye ring. A narrow white band separates the upper breast from the bright yellow lower breast and belly. Its upperparts shimmer with metallic green, while the tail exhibits a violet-blue upperside with black feather tips and a finely barred underside.

Females, on the other hand, feature gray heads and faces, upper breasts, and upperparts, with a less vibrant yellow belly compared to males, and a different pattern on the underside of the tail.

The immature male resembles an adult but with a browner wing panel and less white on the undertail.

Distribution: It inhabits regions spanning from Mexico through Central America to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.

Habitat: The gartered trogon prefers semi-open landscapes such as forest edges, clearings, and shaded coffee and cacao plantations, with some populations inhabiting denser evergreen forest and rainforest.

Behavior Feeding: This trogon typically hovers to feed on fruit and invertebrates from vegetation, consuming a higher proportion of fruit compared to other trogons. It also supplements its diet with various insects and occasionally joins mixed-species foraging flocks.

Breeding: Breeding occurs from March to June in Mexico, May to July in El Salvador, and February to June in Costa Rica. The gartered trogon nests in arboreal nests of wasps, ants, or termites, or in holes within rotten trees, laying clutches of two or three eggs.

Vocalization: The gartered trogon’s song consists of a rapid series of hollow downslurred notes, while its call is described as a rolling chatter.
