Meet the Yellow oriole

The yellow oriole (Icterus nigrogularis), is a passerine bird in the Icteridae family. 20 – 21 cm long, this bird is mainly yellow in color, sporting a distinctive black eye mask, thin black throat line, black tail, and equally black wings with white wing bars.

The female of this species is similar, though slightly duller.

Juveniles are an olive-tinged shade of yellow on the back, and their faces lack any black.

This bird breeds in many parts of South America, in counties such as Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad, the Guianas, and parts of northern Brazil.

The Yellow oriole prefers living and foraging for food in open woodland, scrub, and gardens. It dines mainly on large insects, but will also eat nectar and some fruit.

During the breeding season, a 40 cm-long nest is built, somewhat resembling a hanging basket, suspended branch. A clutch of three pale green-grey eggs laid.

Having such a large of over 1,400.000 km globally this bird is considered at Last Threat by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, though it is threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation.
