The Brown-headed barbet (Psilopogon zeylanicus) measures 27 cm in length with a large head and a short neck and tail wearing prominent pale streaks on its brown head and breast. They have a brown head with a large yellow eye patch, while the rest of his plumage is green. The bill is thick and colored red.

Males and females look very much alike.

Brown-headed barbets nest in a suitable hole in a tree that they will often excavate. Both sexes incubate two to four eggs laid within and often communicate with each other using their Kura, kura calls.
