Description: The charming grey-cheeked fulvetta (Alcippe morrisonia), a delightful member of the Timaliidae family, known as Old World babblers. Identifiable by its brown upperparts, grey head, and face, adorned with a distinct black crown stripe (sometimes faint or absent in certain subspecies), this fulvetta boasts a striking white eye-ring, dark red irides, a grey bill, and buffy underparts complemented by pinkish legs and feet. The slight disparities between the Taiwan subspecies morrisonia and the neighboring mainland subspecies hueti raise questions about the distinct status of the former.

While many timaliids share a resemblance to warblers, this family displays remarkable diversity in appearance, contributing to its status as one of the Old World bird families continually unveiling new species.

Initially, the genus Alcippe housed all “fulvettas” within Timaliidae. However, recent research has revealed distinct lineages, leading to the division of this genus into five independent groups: Alcippe, Schoeniparus, Fulvetta, Pseudominla, and Lioparus.

It is a resident species year round throughout Taiwan.

Thriving in a variety of habitats, the grey-cheeked fulvetta can be found in broadleaf forests, bamboo thickets, scrublands, and secondary forests, spanning elevations from 200 to 3050 meters.

These sociable birds form lively foraging groups, often joining mixed-species flocks to feed on insects, seeds, and berries.

Displaying monogamous behavior, they construct open cup nests in low bushes and typically lay clutches of 2-4 eggs. While considered a resident species, reports suggest the grey-cheeked fulvetta is observed in Hong Kong only during winter, indicating some degree of seasonal movement.

This bird is regarded as of Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
