A Canopy Dwelling Bird Who Wears His Burning Flame Colored Crest Of Fire With Pride!

A medium-sized tanager, commonly located in the canopy of humid forests, where it typically forms associations with mixed-species flocks.

Description: The flame-crested tanager (Loriotus cristatus), boasts a length of approximately 15 cm and a weight of 19 g. The male sports a black plumage with a reddish-orange crest, while the lower back and central throat exhibit a buff or fawn hue. Coverts and underwings showcase white spots, and the black bill has a silver base.

In contrast, the female displays a tan or rufous-brown plumage, complemented by a grayish crown and cheek, as well as a whitish to grayish buff throat. Ochraceous buff tones adorn the underparts, and she possesses a gray bill.

Collected males of the subspecies T. c. nattereri lack the buff or fawn patch in the center of the throat.

DISTRIBUTION: This species is prevalent in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela.

HABITAT: Its habitat encompasses the middle and upper strata of lowland forests and alluvial plains, occasionally extending to forest edges, secondary forests, and trees in small adjacent clearings, maintaining an altitude below 1,400 m.

BEHAVIOR: These birds typically form pairs and actively forage for food in the treetops at considerable heights, stirring up foliage. They often join mixed flocks of other tanagers, furnarids, and various bird species.

FEEDING: The primary diet consists of insects, with occasional consumption of fruits and seeds.

REPRODUCTION: During the mating season, males engage in courtship by displaying their underwing coverts and crest to females. Nest construction involves the creation of a small basket-shaped structure in the undergrowth. The female lays two eggs as part of the reproductive process.

The population has not been quantified but the trend seems steady, and the total population is presumed to be large. For these reasons, the International Union for Conservation of Nature has rated the conservation status of the bird as being of “least concern.”
