The purple-naped lory (Lorius domicella) is primarily red in color, featuring an orange bill. Its crown, extending from above the eye to the nape, is black, transitioning to a violet shade towards the rear. There is a variable yellow band across its upper breast. Its thighs appear purplish-blue, while its wings are predominantly green with a pale whitish-blue hue at the bend. The underwing-coverts are blue, with a broad yellow band spanning the underside of the flight feathers. The tail exhibits a red-tipped brownish-red color.

Immature purple-naped lories can be distinguished by their deeper violet nape, a broader yellow band on the breast, and a brownish bill.

Purple-naped lories are found on the islands of South Moluccas on Seram and possibly still persist in Ambon, Indonesia.

They inhabit hill forests, with a limited altitudinal range from 400 meters up to at least 1050 meters. Densities of this species seem to be highest in the upper parts of this range, particularly above 800 meters.

Purple-naped lories feed acrobatically on pendant seeds of rattan and other plants. They are often observed in small groups of two or three birds. Detailed information about their diet is limited.

There is no available information about their breeding habits in the wild. In captivity, they typically lay two eggs measuring around 30.9–31.6 mm × 24.5–25.8 mm. The incubation period lasts approximately 24 days, and the nestling period is around 3 months.

These birds are quite vocal, producing distinctive sounds that include raptor-like drawn-out whistles and screeches, which can vary in pitch. They also emit rapid sequences of squeaky notes and shorter sounds like “kee” or “wir.”

The purple-naped lory is categorized as “Endangered” by Birdlife International and is listed under CITES II. It was previously considered “Vulnerable.” This species is considered a “restricted-range” species by BirdLife. It is naturally found at low densities, and it is uncommon to rare on Seram, with no recent reports from Ambon or Buru. Some have been trapped and kept by local villagers at Manuela National Park in Seram, indicating a conservation concern.
