A Finely Flecked But Relatively Plain Chest And Belly Fades Into The Background Because Of A Delightfully Fiery Throat And Back!

A neat rufous throat patch contrasts with his black head and the black-spotted mantle and pale underparts giving the bird the appearance of being scaled or spangled.

Rufous-throated Tanager

The rufous-throated tanager (Ixothraupis rufigula) wears an orange-rufous nape and throat patch and that runs to the sides of his head to below the eyes. Its head and crown are black, the same around the eye area. Its beak, legs, and feet are black. It also has a short and somewhat dark tail. The flecks on the chest and belly look spangled due to the black spots in that area. The bill, feet, and legs are black.

Males and females look very similar.
